• Are your tile setters in-house or subcontracted? (Either can be fine, but you should know)

• Can I speak with your plumber and electrician directly before signing?

5. Payment Structure Reflects Professionalism

Luxury contractors do not ask for large sums upfront. A professional payment structure uses:

• A deposit at contract signing to cover design and materials procurement
• Milestone-based draws tied to verified construction progress
• Final payment at punch list completion and your sign-off

If a contractor asks for a large percentage before work begins, that is a red flag regardless of how established they appear.

Poor communication is the most common complaint about remodeling contractors in Arizona. It is also one of the easiest things to evaluate before you sign. Ask references specifically: "How was the communication during construction?"
